Genesis 32:24 tells us that Jacob was left alone and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. Our alone times is where we find out who we really are. Where we find out what is really important in our lives. Where God meets us. Where God wrestles us. Where God changes us. Where God redirects us. Where God instructs us.
Where God loves us.
Where God gives to us.
Have you felt alone recently? Have you felt the anguish of despair and emptiness? Do you feel forsaken? Beloved, God has got you right where he had Jacob – in an alone place, so that he can make you more of the man or woman that he has desired you to be. He couldn’t do this any other way. He had to separate you from all the hustle and bustle of life. He had to get you to a quiet place.
When a mother hen is ready to give birth she pulls away from all activity, even food and water. It almost seems as if she would die of dehydration or starvation. Yet, it is her body telling her to prepare for a momentous occasion. It is her time to quiet herself. Then when it seems as if nothing will ever happen and that all will be lost – they come. One by one. One small chick at a time. Life begins anew. Excitement, promises, new hope, new beginnings.
“Lord, you’ve had me in a lonely place. Help me to understand what you are trying to teach me. Help me to be still enough to hear your voice. Change me, redirect me and instruct me. Let it all be done according to your time.” In Jesus name we pray. amen
